Hawks Nest State Park

49 Hawks Nest Park Road

Nestled in the heart of whitewater rafting country, Hawks Nest State Park encompasses 276 acres bordering a rugged section of the New River Gorge National River and known for the panoramic views.  The New River was designated an American Heritage River on July 30, 1998. There are currently fourteen American Heritage Rivers in the country.

The name of this area comes from the numerous osprey (some call them, “fish hawks”) that once nested on the cliffs.  Today, many hawks, turkey vultures,, black vultures and the occasional bald and golden eagles are seen soaring above the canyon. Additionally,  peregrine falcons study within New River Gorge National River has been part of a restoration program for the species.

Below the 31-room lodge, built in 1967, the New River forms peaceful Hawks Nest Lake. Above the lake, the narrow canyon and rushing water create one of the most challenging whitewater boating waterways in the nation.

Hawks Nest State Park has welcomed visitors since the mid-1930s.

The Hawk's Nest State Park Lodge is located here and is a good spot to stay if your in the area site seeing. There are lots to do around here and nice views of the New River Gorge from the Lodge itself. There is big back deck where the Aerial Tram is located which you can ride to the New River below. There is a nice little Gift Store there as well with lots of souvenirs to chose from. Around the bend heading on down Rt60 is another Overlook, Picnic Shelter, and Gift Shop... worth the stop for day trips or picnic lunches. Check my G+ or FB Picture Albums/Posts for more

Amazing staff that even have my pup 5 star treatment. Sidney is amazing to talk to and deal with. Dustin (or Dusty) was super helpful when I booked my next stay and even offered to help me with hiking trails on my next trip. Room was beyond comfortable and nicely remodeled. Hoping for a pet friendly canyon view when I go back!!

Beautiful historic park and landmark in West Virginia. Great for camping, hiking, rock climbing and just relaxing by the river. This is also a wonderful place to take pictures. There is a visitor center where you can get information and souvenirs.

I paid for a canyon view room.  Beautiful picture overlooking the canyon advertised the view from the room.  When we arrived the man at the desk (he was very nice and understanding thru this ordeal) verified canyon view room, room on 1st floor.  Upon entering room, we opened the curtain to the balcony and all we could see was a fence and trees.  No beautiful view of the canyon. Not even standing on a chair.  The man at the front desk stated that I wasn't the first person upset about the room.  Then it doesn't need to be listed as a premium room with a view.  We were refunded and I was in tears from my wonderful weekend stay ruined by false advertising.
